Nearly all of us remember the rules of this classic game from when we were kids. But to give you a quick reminder, to win you have to be the first to connect four of your coloured counters in a row! Beyond the classic rules, we've been searching for some unique twists to level up the game.
Here's give new Connect Four game variants to try out:
Did you know that Connect Four has been around for as long as humans have been playing games? Back 3500 years ago in Ancient Egypt, there was evidence of alignment games that were scratched into simple boards or even dirt, where pieces would be placed to get three in a row before their opponent.
Fast forward a few thousand years to the era of Captain James Cook, who spent much of this downtime playing Connect Four while sailing around the world. He spent hours playing this game in which round wooden balls were dropped into slots on a wooden game board.
But it wasn’t until the 1970s when Milton Bradley created the plastic version of Connect Four as we all know it today, that it quickly became a cultural phenomenon.
Our Giant Connect 4 Games are all set up for some coin-dropping fun. Suitable for indoors or outdoors and for all ages, it's a nostalgic addition to any family get-together or game night.
The Maxi 4, Jumbo 4 and Big 4 increase in size as you go up the range, featuring hand-painted green wooden frames and brightly coloured counters.
While our popular Up 4 It is made from a blow moulded plastic frame and chunky counters, with storage on the side to store your counters after playing.
Almost everyone grew up playing this classic game during their childhood. But if you need us to jog your memory, the classic game starts with two players or teams on either side of the board, with their own coloured counters (usually yellow or red).
Each player takes turns dropping their coloured discs into one of the columns, intending to align four of their discs in a row. This can be done horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The first player to get four in a row wins!
But the aim of the game isn’t just to focus on your counters but to try and block your opponent's chance of winning. Try to plan several moves and keep an eye out for any potential winning combinations your opponent has lined up.
We all know the classic rules of the game, but there are so many exciting ways to play with your Giant Connect Four game. These new variations bring a fresh take by introducing new rules and dimensions.
To get started, palyers take turns filling the bottom row with their opponent’s coloured counters.
When the bottom row is full, they move onto the second row and continue until the entire game board is full.
Then, you alternate turns by removing your own coloured counter from the bottom of the game board and placing it at the top.
If a player removes a counter that’s part of a string of four other counters of the same colour, then that counter is placed aside. Then that player takes another turn.
You win by being the first one to accumlate ten counters!
It’s not hard to guess the rules of this game variant. Just as the name suggests, Connect Three is way simpler than the original. Instead of trying to match four counters in a row, players must form a string of three counters. Ideal if you want a quicker game or are playing with tiny players.
The rules bring a whole new level of strategy to the game. Instead of simply slotting discs in the top like standard Connect Four, you must pop discs out of the bottom row. Removing discs gives the board a different alignment and adds further buzz to the game. Players can set up plans to make new opportunities for themselves or break up their opponent's next moves.
If you’re after a bigger challenge, you can try out this longer version of the game. Similar to the classic rules, you are now connecting five of your counters in a row.
This speed version brings a timed element to the game to force players to make their moves within a set time limit. The pressure of the clock sparks some nail-biting tension and forces faster decision-making for a thrilling twist, leading to more spontaneity and errors.
Giant Connect Four is more than just an oversized version of the classic game. Whether you're sticking to the traditional rules we all know or want to spice it up with new twists, Giant Connect Four offers some coin-dropping fun for everyone. Bring out the giant discs and let the games begin!
